WELCOME to the Genoa City Municipal Court webpage. We hope the information provided here will be beneficial for our visitors!
COURT IS HELD on the SECOND WEDNESDAY of every month (please check schedule to confirm date), with juvenile matters beginning at 6:00pm, pretrials beginning at 6:30pm and adult matters commencing at 7:00pm.
Trials are scheduled as needed and defendants will be notified of the scheduled trial date either the night of pretrial or by mail. Please make sure this Court has your current mailing address to avoid missing important notices!
IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO APPEAR, you may enter a plea by mail. However, if you wish to enter a plea in person and you have an acceptable reason to request a continuance, the continuance will most likely be granted. It is not necessary to request a continuance if you only want time to pay the citation. Your case will be defaulted due to non-appearance and you will automatically be given 60 days in which to pay the citation(s). Typically, the Court will not grant more than one continuance without good cause.
IF YOU MISS YOUR COURT DATE, the Court will either issue a Warrant for your arrest OR enter a No Contest plea on your behalf, whereby you will be found guilty by default due to non-appearance. A Notice of Default will be mailed to your last known address and you will be given 60 days to pay. You may request to have your case reopened by sending a letter to the Court, explaining the reasons the date was missed. The Court will then decide whether to grant or deny your request. Since the citation(s) will have been processed and sent to the State, there is a $50 reopening fee that must be included with the request, which will be refunded if your request is denied.
IF YOU CANNOT PAY IN 60 DAYS, you may ask the Court to set up a payment plan for you. This is done on a case by case basis, depending on your individual circumstances and must be approved by the Judge. If you do not follow the payment plan that you agreed to, the Court will impose the alternative sanction (either drivers license suspension or jail) unless other satisfactory arrangements are made with the Court. When making a payment to the Court, make checks payable to: GENOA CITY MUNICIPAL COURT.
THE COURT IS LOCATED in the same building as the Genoa City Village Hall, Police Department and Fire Department, which is directly behind First Banking Center at the intersection of Freeman Street and Walworth Street (also signed as County Road "H"). Click HERE for a map provided by Mapquest.
